My 6th g grandparents were indentured mulattoe servants. All of the neighbors were listed as black ir mulattoes with only a few white families in Edgecombe NC. I've searched for years to find the family beyond the 6th- Sadly, nothing. The mullatoes were supposedly Indian descendants of either of Scottish or Black and Indian or black and Scottish. Very difficult. The oldest photo we can find is definitely Indian, not African but only God knows. 😂

How did you get to where you can see your grandmother's relations? (about 12:38min into the video) I've gone back over and over and can't see how you got there. I'm on my computer on another screen, I logged into my FS account and can't figure out how you did that with your grandmother.

@AncestryAimee al·buh·maarl Or at least that's how the weather men say it. I usually just drive through Albemarle Co on the way to Nelson Co and the weatger men say it here a lot because albemarke sound nc isn't far from va state line. They say it a little more southern in NC or in the mountains. HR doesn't sound as southern because of the melting pot that the navy brings. You don't otherwise have an accent. I could place you from speaking anyway. You're just not from albemarle or hampton roads, is all.

I have Irish ancestry and find that when it comes to the US one of the best resources are Naturalization papers which often list exact place names down to the townland (the lowest level of geography used in Ireland, especially to collect taxes). These are behind a paywall on sites like Ancestry, but if you don't have anything to do on get all your ducks in a row, subscribe for a month, and do as much as you can. One other I would say invaluable source, again on Ancestry, are US Social Security records (I think death records), especially if you have an Irish born ancestor, born after civil records began in 1864, mainly because they state the exact birth date of the person which you can look up against the Irish Civil Records, which are free to look up births, marriages and deaths from the year 1864 until 1922 (1845 for Church of Ireland, Protestant, marriages, although the vast majority of Irish were Catholic so it's 1864 onwards for these marriage records). The Irish Civil Records are free to search on the irishgenealogy dot ie website (to to the Civil Records tab). I find censuses and ship passenger lists, although containing useful information like ages and family members to potentially at least partially validate an ancestors, less useful, but you never know what might be in one so don't just discard these sources. If you can get a townland and county then I also find the townlands dot ie really useful to search, but remember often people writing down these townland names in the US (and even in Ireland) didn't record them correctly so if you can't find an exact match try and see if there's a similar sounding one, and then go through to two Irish Censuses (1901 and 1911) and see if anyone with the same surname you are looking for is there (obviously if you're looking for a Quinn, Murphy, or O'Neill this might not be so useful, but if the surname you're looking for isn't so common it's worth at least seeing). Lastly there's always DNA and getting the nearest living member of the family to the Irish ancestor you're researching (as well as yourself of course) to test might reveal matches with well researched family trees that give even more clues. In the end it might be difficult, especially if the ancestor you're looking for emigrated before say 1840, and definitely before 1820, mainly because the records just aren't there (unless the person was of wealth or nobility, in which case they may have been written about). I would also say reach out to DNA matches, message them, and make use of local genealogical societies and Facebook groups, you never know someone might have a story passed down about a relative who went to America and that you'd never get in any record. I hope what I've written is of use to whoever may read it. There may be other ways, other sources, bury I just thought this might be of use to someone, it's what I do and have had success using it on some and other ancestors are still elusive, it there waiting to be found. Happy hunting!!!

So, are you saying that Ancestry owns public records?

No. But they need to expend the money to digitize them and index them and then store those images on servers and make the technology available for you to access them. The same holds true for MyHeritage and FamilySearch.

@@AncestryAimee Ms. Cowan just said that they acquire the records. That says to me they own them. That also sounds like a gate keeping issue.

@AncestryAimee I've been researching family records since 1992. At first, I found Ancestry an interesting resource. We were always told that the Mormon records were unreliable. Then, when Ancestry came on the scene, people fell all over themselves to join. Heck, I joined and am currently a member. It took a while for the facts about Ancestry to come out, but I remember them having to do some damage control when it was published that they were Mormon owned. There were records that were not easily accessed, such as Black History, LGBTQIA+ History, and even Women's Herstory! Catholic History was supposedly scquelched too, but that may have been the church that did that! Cyndi's List has been a wonderful resource that is free. The problem I have seen is that some of her links are now leading to secondary resources that are pay walled. It irks me to have to pay for a free resource!

@annacatherinesendgikoski1965 I can see that. Great question/comment. They actually acquire the rights to show them on their site but the government entity still owns the original record.

I don't know. I will try this. I do not want to join the religion, I just want to find my ancestors
